*Story: Technology Background: Wormhole Travel

Story: Wormhole can be defined is the connection of any two points in space without having to go through the distance in between. After the invention of the Virtual Higgs Generator it was discovered that quantum entanglement was made possible by naturally occurring quantum scale wormholes. One of the properties of these wormholes is that the stronger the gravitational field the shorter the distance between any two points they connect. This is why it wasn't discovered before the age of interplanetary flight, as an example the average length of a wormhole at 1G is less than the width of an atom. Out at the Lagrange Points it is only up to a couple of dozen of meters. The weaker the gravitational field the longer the distance these wormholes can stretch. So inside the solar system there are all kinds of worm holes that stretch between the edge of one objects gravitational field to the edge of another but you have to go to the far edge of the solar system to find wormholes that stretch to other solar systems. Theoretically if you got far enough away from the edge of the Milky Way Galaxy you could find wormholes that stretch to other 'nearby' Galaxies.

It wasn't long after that discovery that these natural wormholes what mankind learned to capture and expand these wormholes in such a way as to allow macro scale objects through them. The fluctuation of the VHG used to do this came to be called a Virtual Higgs Cascade.

*Game Play Mechanic: Discrete Areas of Action.

Description: In any game you have to define the playing field. Where does the action take place? With the worm hole mechanic described above the playing field would be any region with a significant gravitational field. Long Distance Instantaneous Travel is restricted inside the gravitational field. As an example a player can only jump to a point that's 260,000 miles from the Earth or 70,000 miles from the Moon which ever is greater. They could jump further away from that and move closer at sub light speeds. So you end up with a gourd shaped area with a soft nebulous outer shell.

There doesn't have to be anything that stops a player from staying at slower than light speeds to go from area to area. The fact that there will be a whole lot of nothing will prevent the vast majority of players from doing it.

*Game Play Mechanic: No wormhole weapons

Description: The limitations also explains why anyone doesn't just open a wormhole right next to or inside their target and shove an explosive with a wireless dead man switch through it and then close the wormhole. Near a gravitational field all of the usable wormholes would generally be too short to deliver a shot without the target being able to retaliate quicker with more standard munitions. This still leaves open the possibility of a skipper missile that makes short jumps to evade defensive fire.
