What to expect in Release 9
on Sunday, February, 24, 2019 11:15 AM

Alright gang... Release 9 has been this vapor-ware quality thing that has taken way too long. We made the decision to port the game away from it's old XNA framework and we finally got it done.

Let's get right down to it... Here is what you will see in Release 9:

  • Horizons has been ported to MonoGame. This is HUGE. It allows for many things that are already in Release 9, as well as many things we'll be doing. This is what took us the longest to achieve.

  • Full 64bit support! Horizons will still run on 32bit systems but is now optimized to run (and perform better) on 64bit systems.

  • Upgraded rendering engine. Everything will look a little bit clearer and crisper with the new engine.

  • More ships!

  • Completely new Dialog system allowing for more in-depth conversations than ever before.

  • Completely new Module-based content directory structure. The 'worlds' folder will be going away soon, and it will be replaced by discrete folders for each type of asset in the game. This is HUGE as it will allow those of you that have created your own content to go even crazier and create it in your own directories, separated from the core Horizons content. This will also allow for DLC later on. You'll be able to create Modules that 'replace' the core Horizons content with you own.

  • Completely new Web Socket engine.

  • Upgraded Web Server engine.

  • Revised Vessel XML structure.

  • Open World mode: While it was teased in earlier releases it's really here now. This allows you to fly around the universe as you please. Comms officer can now select missions on the fly (in game).

  • Comms can now control cargo on board the Horizons and it's vessels (Shuttles, etc).

  • NPC can now have tasks, so they can have focused goals rather than generic AI behaviors.

So where are we headed for the remainder of 2019?

  • Steam! We are in the process of moving Horizons over to the Steam network. Existing licenses will be given a Steam Key.

  • Steam Workshop support! So those of you creating your own content can publish it via Steam Workshop for all the world to see!

  • VR support! The code base is already hidden in Release 9. Look for it in a release some time this summer.

  • Module/Mission editors!

  • Trade economy.

  • More ships/components/etc.

  • Improved Multi-bridge support.

  • We will start to release the beginning Campaign towards the end of the year.

It's nice to finally see some activity on the forum and having positive news. Is there any release date yet for version 9?

Release 9 will make it out the door in the next two weeks. There will be a lot of releases to follow but Release 9 is about moving on to all the things I've talked about for awhile.

I'm certain new bugs will be found, but with a release of this size it's expected. On the surface a lot will feel the same but so much under the hood is brand new.

I see that MonoGame is open source and already ported to MacOS and Linux as well as iOS and Android.  Is this going to be the case that the game will eventually port to those and other platforms??  Think Raspberry Pi 3b+??  This will be very enabling for those who want to build up their starship bridge on the cheap.

You can already use Raspberry Pis for console displays today! In the 'Starship Horizons Deluxe' video most of those displays are being powered by Pis!

With Horizons only the 'server' needs to be Windows. And yes long term we will be looking at macOS and possible Linux.

Just trying to clean up a few loose ends for this release. Mainly how the engine loads Vessels (which has been completely re-done) to make sure all is well =)

Just an update gang it will be tomorrow morning for the release! Just trying to clean up things with the new Updater and Installer. I will say some may want to do a clean re-install as the entire directory structure has changed.

And while the wait for Release 9 has been over-long. Expect a flurry of releases this year as we head towards Steam.

Release 9 is about a foundational change... Many things will feel the same while others will seem completely new. The content will see the biggest upgrade with the following releases. We have a few new folks helping with missions and the Campaign so look to that in the coming months!
